Millet Tabouleh, My Sister’s New Baby and Priorities….

Hi everyone. I was all set to talk about my new gorgeous ToryJane shoes and how I scored at yard sales this weekend but then my sister went and had a baby! I understand about priorities and I know that having a baby is more important than clothes and shoes. Agreed? The clothes discussion will wait.

I had a whole video that I took of my sister in the hospital to show you how she feels that eating healthy food when breast feeding and serving healthy food to our children when they are able to eat is a priority. Where is the video? While I was showing the 3 and 5 year olds their new cousin on my flip camera, they deleted it!

Don’t worry,I will tell you what she said when interviewed: My sister buys organic fruit and vegetables whenever she can and she purees them. Her two year old daughter has only eaten homemade chicken nuggets because of the garbage that is in the processed ones. Yes, it is more time consuming but it is a health priority. She, herself, tries to eat healthy foods when breastfeeding and not only while she is pregnant. Her goal is to keep things healthy from the start to avoid power struggles later on (O.K., I added that in but I think she agrees). Thanks for sharing, Zoe!

Here is a variation of Tabouleh that I made with the remainder of my herb garden parsley from the summer. I hope you like the millet instead of the traditional bulgar wheat. I plan to make this as one of my dishes for Zoe (and baby Cy since he will be indirectly eating it too). Congratulations brother in law Danton and sister Zoe!

Millet Tabouleh:

4 cups cooked millet
1 cup cleaned, washed, dried and minced fresh parsley
1 large seeded and chopped tomato
1 clove crushed garlic
3 TBS Olive Oil, more to taste
1 tsp kosher salt, more to taste
ground black pepper to taste

  1. FYI: You can steam millet for about 30-40 minutes or use a handy dandy rice cooker for perfection every time 🙂

    What is Millet?

    * small round seed of an annual grass that is eaten as a cereal in Africa and Asia
    * not of true grain cereal, but is related to sorghum
    * light delicate flavour with an ideal texture for molding
    * pan roasted millet tastes like toasted cashew nuts

    Nutrition and Millet

    * good source of protein
    * contains more amino acid, lysine, than do wheat, oats and rice
    * excellent source of B vitamins thiamin, riboflavin, niacin, pyridoxine and folate
    * minerals – magnesium, zinc, copper and iron
    * rich source of mineral building phytochemical phytic acid

  2. Congratulations on the new addition to the family. Good for your sister. I always tell parents that jarred baby food is OK in the early stages of learning to accept puree but moving to the taste of family food helps in the transition to table food which has so much more food value. Research shows that babies also like the food that mom eats while pregnant and breast feeding as the baby is used to the taste of that food.
